This fall, Health Care Support Services (HCSS) workers in the newly-formed Prairie Mountain Health region were given the opportunity to choose their union by casting a ballot.

This afternoon at the Manitoba Labour Board, 2073 ballots were counted in the vote between members of the MGEU and CUPE, and a decision was finally made as to which union would represent these members at the bargaining table, in grievance proceedings, and in their workplace.

Here are the results (which remain unofficial until confirmed by the Labour Board in the coming days):
MGEU - 1062 ballots
CUPE - 1004 ballots

7 spoiled ballots

Out of the five representation votes taking place throughout the province as a result of the Province amalgamating Regional Health Authorities in 2012, today’s count represented the largest group of members. Going into the campaign, the MGEU represented just under 800 out of approximately 3,500 members.

“This win recognizes just how committed the MGEU is to being a member-driven union and we are honoured to represent HCSS workers. We welcome the opportunity to represent these members from the former Brandon and Assiniboine RHA’s and we're so glad to keep our Parkland Brothers and Sisters,” said MGEU President, Michelle Gawronsky.

Once the Manitoba Labour Board issues a new certificate to the MGEU, all workers involved in this vote will officially become MGEU members. After that, the MGEU can begin working with CUPE on a transition process that will allow the MGEU to handle any outstanding grievances and issues.

“We can’t wait to talk to everyone in preparation for bargaining,” Gawronsky added, “and then get a package to the employer ASAP.”

Until the new contract is negotiated between representatives of the MGEU and the employer, each union’s previous collective agreement will remain in place.

“I’d like to once again thank everyone who worked so hard to ensure members had the opportunity to make an informed choice,” Gawronsky said. “Today’s success in the Prairie Mountain Health region will only provide us with a stronger, more unified voice as we move forward together.”
