The United Nations has declared October 11, 2012 to be the First “International Day of the Girl” – a day to recognize young women as important citizens and powerful voices of change.

To celebrate this occasion, the Manitoba Status of Women will be holding a special event and they want Manitobans to nominate special young women who are making a difference in their communities.

Nominate a girl you know:

The Province is seeking nominations for girls ages 12 to 17 from across Manitoba to attend this event at the Manitoba Legislative Building. Twenty girls will be selected for the opportunity to meet members of the Legislative Assembly, gain skills and confidence, increase their network of friends and build a greater understanding of themselves as leaders. There is no cost for these young women and their chaperones to attend.

Who is Eligible:

Nominees for the event include any young woman from Manitoba who:
•has an interest in creating positive change in their communities
•could benefit from an opportunity to increase their untapped leadership qualities
•is interested in promoting culture and heritage in their communities
•has demonstrated courage and bravery while overcoming personal obstacles
•cares about social injustice and human rights
•is a role model in their community for their peers
•wants to meet other like-minded girls from across the province in a fun and interactive environment

Who can Nominate:

Nominations can come from community organizations, community leaders, schools, parents, guardians, siblings, teachers, coaches, mentors or anyone who has a relationship with the young woman. Nominations may even come from girls themselves (self-nomination form).

The Selection Process:

The International Day of the Girl Selection Committee will review all nominations received by the nomination deadline. The Committee will ensure that participants for the event reflect Manitoba’s rich diversity and regional representation.
A notice of receipt will be sent after the application has been received. Successful nominees will be notified by the end of August 2012.
