On August 2, 1987, about 250 people in Winnipeg took a brave step and marched out in the city’s first Pride Day.

Today, more than 30,000 people attend the ten-day Pride Winnipeg Festival, which has become a celebration of confidence, fun, colour, music, laughter, optimism, and activism for Manitoba’s LGBTTQ community.

This year, the MGEU’s Equity and Human Rights Committee is celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the festival by becoming a silver sponsor.

It’s the first time the union has sponsored the event, something MGEU Equity and Human Rights GLBT Representative, Wayne Chacun, feels is long overdue.

“I think organizations and unions like ours realize the important role they have to play in fostering fair and tolerant workplaces and communities,” said Chacun. “I’m very proud of our committee and our union for throwing its support behind this event.”

The festival starts May 25 and wraps up with a rally, parade and party on Sunday, June 3. MGEU members will be joining thousands that Sunday at 11:00 am for the rally at the Manitoba Legislature. The Pride Parade begins at noon followed by live entertainment, Pride Mart and Beer Tent at the Festival at the Forks (1:00 pm – 6:30 pm). EVERYONE is welcome.
