It is with heavy hearts that the MGEU mourns the passing of long-time member and dedicated activist, Gene Fontaine. He became a member in 1973 within the Trades Component of the Civil Service and moved to the Legal Component in the Department of Labour as a Health and Safety officer in 1988.

Gene began his union activism in the early 80's on Area Council, until he became Area 5 Director in 1987. He was the MGEU's 4th Vice-President from 1989-92.

Gene also represented Civil Service Legal members in his community from 1988 – 2004, in many union positions including Legal Area 7 Health and Safety Representative 1988-93,  Legal Area 7 Negotiator 1988-92, Legal Area 7 Steward 1989-92, 1993-95, 2002-04.

Gene was an honest, aggressive and no nonsense union activist, showing commitment and dedication in all his efforts to represent his union.

Gene is survived by his wife Brenda, of 41 years; daughter Kimberly (Mike) Lewicki, son David of Alberta, brother Cam (Linda). He will also be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren, Peyton and Adam Lewicki all of Winnipeg, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service for Gene was held on Saturday, April 7, 2012 in the Wheeler Funeral Chapel in Transcona. For more details, or if you’d like to share your memories of Gene, please visit his obituary here.
