Manitoba's Finance Minister Stan Struthers announced today the 2012 budget will be presented on April 17 when the Manitoba legislature resumes sitting.

The story posted on the Province's website today was lean on details but the minister intimated further belt tightening due to last year's spring flood could be a possibility.

"In lean times, families look for ways to reduce their expenses and through our budget process, we will too."

MGEU President Lois Wales hopes that such a statement is not in reference to further cuts to public services.

"One of the things that has pulled us and many other provinces through tough economic times are strong public services," says Wales. "If there's anything we've learned from the Filmon government in the '90s and their heavy-handed austerity measures is that cutbacks will only weaken our economy further."
