On Thursday, March 8, 2012, Winnipeg will celebrate the 101st anniversary of International Women’s Day (IWD) by participating in a pancake breakfast, a march, and several other activities organized by community agencies.

This year's theme is "Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures." So come out with your signs and noisemakers and raise your voice in solidarity of girl's and women's rights here and around the world!

The MGEU Women’s Committee will be participating in the following activities on IWD and invite everyone to join them:

7 – 9 am – Breakfast at the Union Centre hosted by The Manitoba Federation of Labour, Winnipeg Labour Council, and Canadian Labour Congress (Tickets are $10 and are available at the Winnipeg Labour Council (504-275 Broadway) or by calling 942-0522. Guest speakers will be starting at 8am and the MFL Women's Committee is conducting a Silent Auction (donations for the auction are appreciated). 11:45 am - Manitoba Legislature, Room 200 hosted by The Honourable Jennifer Howard and Manitoba Status of Women (RSVP by phoning 945-6281 or toll free 1-800-2263-0234)

5:30 pm – City Hall (510 Main Street) – Rally with Dancing Spirit Drum Group, Kelly Moist - President CUPE

Then depart for The Union Centre (275 Broadway)

6:00 pm – A gathering with acknowledgments from Diane Plant, Lois Wales - MGEU President, and Nyange Koineh. Food and drinks will close this IWD event in The Union Centre Auditorium (275 Broadway).

Some other activities celebrating International Women’s Day include:

Saturday, March 10 – Noon – 4pm; 611 Main Street. Mentoring Artists for Women’s Art is featuring craftswomen from around the world who will be sharing their skills (African basket weaving, Bhutanese knitting and more). Celebrate International Women’s day at MAWA’s 4th Annual CRAFT STRAVAGANZA. This event is FREE. Materials and international snacks will be provided. Child minding will be offered on site.
