After four sessions at the bargaining table, Seine River Educational Assistants (MGEU Local 145) were given a final offer from their employer on January 12, 2012.

This past Saturday, members voted to reject that offer, which means both parties will now be heading to conciliation (currently scheduled for February 9th and 16th) in an effort to reach an agreement.

What is conciliation?

Conciliation is a method used to reach a resolution on a contract between two parties. The conciliation officer is a neutral person who is brought in to assist the parties in reaching an agreement that is acceptable to both sides.

Conciliation is different from arbitration. A conciliation officer cannot impose a settlement, but they have considerable skill and experience in negotiations and labour relations. Often, they will suggest different approaches or an acceptable compromise.
