For 2012, the MGEU’s membership education department has expanded the list of bursaries and scholarships available to members.

The program will now award $18,500 annually to deserving members and their families. Among the changes are eight additional $1,000 area bursaries (one per area) and a new $2,000 scholarship named in honour of Peter Olfert, former MGEU President (1986-2010).

A guiding principle of Peter’s leadership is his belief that government improves the quality of people’s lives, particularly through a vibrant, dedicated public sector. For this reason, the Peter Olfert annual Scholarship will be awarded to an individual studying in any fields that potentially impact public policy (such as safety and health, the environment, human rights, and community economic development).

As with all MGEU scholarships / bursaries, the new scholarship is available to any active MGEU member (registered, dues-paying, in good standing), or a spouse/common-law partner of an active member, or a child or ward of an active member. Applicants must be attending a Manitoba post-secondary institution on a full-time basis and submit a letter of a 1,000 words or more detailing their area of study, their long-term goals and their volunteer activities.
