On Friday, October 14, the MGEU Human Rights Committee helped sponsor “Night of the Disappeared", an evening of cultural entertainment to raise awareness of the plight of thousands of union activists, political prisoners, prisoners of conscience and others around the world who have disappeared, either imprisoned or feared dead.

With host Alex Freedman of CBC Manitoba, speakers such as Flor Marcelino, MLA for Logan, and volunteers from Amnesty International shared the names and stories of the disappeared in places like the Philippines and Ethiopia, and described how Amnesty-sponsored letter writing campaigns have led to the release of many of those falsely imprisoned.

African and Aboriginal dancers entertained supporters, including several members of MGEU’s Equity and Human Rights Committee, who also enjoyed a traditional Ethiopian vegetarian dinner.
