Last month’s announcement by the MGEU to establish a new graduate student scholarship fund that will support research on Lake Winnipeg signalled the union’s commitment to saving the lake.

Each day in our homes, our yards and in our workplaces, the products we use end up in our rivers, lakes and streams causing toxic algae blooms and polluting our water. Lake Winnipeg is Manitoba’s largest lake and is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world, but it’s in trouble. A recent report shows phosphorous levels in the lake are three times higher than they were in Lake Erie when that lake was described as "dead."

To get the message out about reducing the nutrients we produce that are affecting our fish habitats, recreation, and drinking water, the union has teamed up with the Lake Friendly Initiative (an organization dedicated to the protection and improvement of our lakes, rivers and streams) to provide hour-long workplace presentations to MGEU members.

Bring a bag lunch and talk to Lake Friendly Executive Director, Colleen Sklar about what products are harmful to our watershed and what you can do every day to help restore the health of Lake Winnipeg.

Here are the presentations currently scheduled for Winnipeg Civil Service members:

Tuesday, June 28th - 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
12th Floor North Boardroom, Green Manitoba Office
155 Carlton St. , Winnipeg
