May Day also kicks off the MayWorks Festival of Labour and the Arts, which is celebrated every year as a multi-disciplinary festival that focuses on working class themes. It's held in Winnipeg every year throughout the month of May to honour and promote the many positive contributions of unions and working people in general.

Inspired by events surrounding the anniversary of the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike, MayWorks focuses on the art produced both by artists (with their depiction of the working class life) and by workers with their own interpretation of their lives and struggles.

The MGEU is a proud supporter of MayWorks.

About May Day

May Day is also known around the world as International Workers' Day. Activists have traditionally used the first of May as an opportunity to celebrate the social and economic achievements of the labour movement as well as to draw attention to the glaring injustices that remain.
