For a second year, the Government of Manitoba officially proclaimed November 6th as “Community Social Service Workers Appreciation Day”.

“It is important that Manitoba recognize the valuable contributions made by community social service workers and we honour them for their invaluable work. I am proud of Manitoba’s social programs and services, delivered by so many conscientious and committed workers who help people in need and who work to strengthen families and build community capacity,” said Minister of Family Services and Consumer Affairs, Gord Mackintosh.

Last year, as part of a Canada-wide effort to bring greater recognition to the critical work being done in these jobs every day, the MGEU proposed to government that November 6 be proclaimed Community-Based Social Services Day in Manitoba. Well over a hundred MGEU members gathered at the Legislature to share in the celebration and to discuss the dire funding issues being faced by these agencies.

The MGEU represents many Community Social Service workers across the province and recently twenty MGEU Locals have voted to join the brand new Community-Based Social Services Component.

“I’d like to pass on my deep appreciation for the services you provide to some of our most vulnerable citizens. Those working in agencies like yours, and indeed, the entire sector, have been under-recognized and under-funded for far too long, and I look forward to working with all of you to marshal the resources and respect you all deserve,” said MGEU President Lois Wales.
