On November 6th, the Manitoba Developmental Centre (MDC) celebrated a job well done, after the centre aced a recent four year accreditation by the Council of Accreditation (COA).

The MDC, in turn, recognized the fine work of its 734 casual, part time and full time employees (many of whom are represented by the MGEU) at the event by handing out awards to recognize the quality care in the facility’s various residential cottages.

The COA is a non-profit, independent accreditation organization that accredits facilities providing services to individuals with developmental disabilities. They conduct research to determine the best practices in the field and then evaluate the services of each centre based on those standards.

The MDC’s care was evaluated in June and was based on the residents’ quality of life; whether they are able to make choices and whether they are involved in decisions around their own care; as well as a focus on the residents’ health and safety and living environments. The COA conducted focus groups, reviewed records and met with families, staff and residents to determine the MDC’s rating – a very impressive 98 per cent.

Congratulations to all MDC members, for their hard work and continued dedication to those in need of care.

Located in Portage la Prairie, the Manitoba Developmental Centre provides care, supervision and developmental programs for nearly 300 adults with a mental disability.
