In early December 2020, MGEU members were notified of the plan adopted by the union’s Board of Directors to conduct Local election meetings and the MGEU Convention using remote (virtual) technology so that they may proceed even if COVID-19 pandemic restrictions remain in effect through 2021.

Please note: if members want to participate in their virtual Local election meetings and the virtual Convention, they must ensure the union has their valid personal email address at least 16 days in advance of the Local election meeting (you can update your information here or contact the MGEU Resource Centre).

About the Virtual Local Election Meetings

Each MGEU Local will hold a virtual election meeting between April and June of 2021. Meeting notices will be sent to members and posted on the MGEU Meetings / Events Calendar 35 days prior to each Local meeting. Voting credentials will be sent by email 7 days before each meeting.

Details about how to connect to your virtual Local election meeting will be provided in these notices and technical support will be available to help members connect into their meeting.

Again, if members want to participate in these virtual Local election meetings, they must ensure the MGEU has their valid personal email address at least 16 days in advance of their Local meeting.

About the MGEU’s 2021 Virtual Convention

The virtual 2021 MGEU Convention has now been scheduled as follows:

  • Virtual Delegate Orientation – October 7, 2021 (6:30pm - 8:30pm)
  • Virtual All-Candidates Forum – October 19, 2021 (7:00pm - 8:00pm)
  • Virtual MGEU Convention - October 20-21, 2021

Secure Online Meeting and Voting

MGEU has engaged Data on the Spot to use their secure online voting and meeting platform for the virtual Local election meetings and Convention.

Measures have been taken to secure the confidentiality of all member information handled by Data on the Spot. To ensure a secret ballot, Data on the Spot has also signed a contract prohibiting them from disclosing to anyone, including the MGEU, how each member casts their vote in each election.

Members are advised that some email messages regarding these virtual meetings will be sent directly to them by Data on the Spot, who will also provide direct technical support for members.

Provincial Officer Elections

The MGEU Board of Directors has temporarily adapted the rules and procedures for provincial officer elections to accommodate the fact that both the Convention and Local election meetings will be conducted virtually.

The complete 2021 election rules and procedures are listed in Appendix 1 of the updated MGEU Policy and Procedures Manual. The modifications apply only to the 2021 election and Convention process.

Members interested in running for a provincial officer position should obtain a candidate information package from Janet Kehler, MGEUDirector of Member Services, who has been designated as the MGEU Elections Chairperson. She can be reached through the MGEU Resource Centre.

To be on the ballot for a provincial officer position, each candidate must submit their completed nomination form and letter of intent to the Elections Chairperson by 12:00pm on October 20, 2021.

Please note that candidates submitting their papers early are able to take full advantage of the various campaigning opportunities provided for in the rules and procedures.

Beginning in August, members and delegates will be able to access information about nominated candidates once available. This candidate information will also be mailed to all delegates.
