This week, the Federal Government announced that its Memorial Grant Program for First Responders -- which offers a one-time lump sum, tax-free direct maximum payment of $300,000 to the families of first responders who die while on the job -- will now cover the families of fallen Correctional and Probation Officers.

“This is so valuable for these officers and their families,” said MGEU President Michelle Gawronsky.  “It’s huge in terms of respect to finally be recognized for the dangers they face while on the job everyday."

The Federal Government says families will be able to apply for funds from the program early next year and it will be retroactive to April 1, 2018, the date the program started. The program was first designed for families of fallen Paramedics, Firefighters and Police Officers.

“One life lost at work is one too many. No amount of money can make up for the heartache of losing a loved one. But having the work these first responders do recognized in such a way will help these families going forward,” Gawronsky added.
