The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) has announced the recipients of its 2020 scholarships and a Manitoban is on this year’s list.

Jessica Lohr -- whose parent, Lidia Lohr, is an MGEU member of Local 135 -- will be receiving the 2020 Brian Fudge Memorial Scholarship.

Jessica was inspired to enter the field of public psychiatric nursing due to the fact that mental illnesses are the leading cause of disability in Canada, but only 20% of children and young adults will receive services.

Her essay emphasizes that “The goal of the services that public psychiatric nursing provides is to enrich the lives of our citizens, inspire growth, and allow for the change within oneself to reach new heights, and attain the goals we thought we never could . . . that is how communities are built, by inspiring development, and improving the quality of life in Canada, one person at a time.”

Congratulations to Jessica and all of the 2020 winners. For the full list of NUPGE scholarship recipients, visit https://nupge.ca/content/nupge-scholarship-winners-2020.
