After five weeks of the MGEU repeatedly calling on the Pallister government to provide concrete details about its proposed reductions to the Civil Service workforce, the MGEU has finally received a specific proposal -- Civil Service workers are being asked to take 5 unpaid days before the close of this fiscal year.
"As expected, the government continues to threaten hundreds of layoffs if our members do not accept the proposal, and they will not say which workers would be laid off," MGEU President Michelle Gawronsky said.
Over the next week, the MGEU will be reviewing the government's proposal,
listening to what members have to say about it, and seeking additional
details from government representatives.
"We continue to believe that service cuts and work reductions are wrong for our public services and wrong for Manitoba's economic recovery," Gawronsky said. "We also recognize that the proposal is significantly less harmful than the extreme 30% reductions floated by the Premier and his representatives last month."
