MGEU's Melissa Dvorak elected Winnipeg Labour Council President

Last night, the Winnipeg Labour Council held elections for positions on its executive. Melissa Dvorak, an MGEU activist out of Macdonald Youth Services, was elected President. With Dvorak’s election in Winnipeg, MGEU members now hold the position of Labour Council president in Brandon (Kirk Carr), Portage (Ed Miller), and Selkirk (Susan Smerchanski). MGEU members Liz Dodds and Jesse McNeil also serve as the elected area representatives from The Pas and Southeast on the Manitoba Federation of Labour Executive Council.

“I want to extend congratulations to Melissa on her election,” said MGEU President Michelle Gawronsky. “I’m proud of the contributions MGEU members make at labour councils and in communities across Manitoba. It says a lot of the dedication of our members that they step up in leadership positions like this and contribute to making working people’s lives better.”  

All MGEU Locals have the choice as to whether they affiliate to a labour council, and if they do they may send a delegate to the council meetings who reports back to their Local. MGEU members who are elected as labour council delegates are encouraged to attend as often as possible in order to update their Locals on events happening in their communities.

“There are so many instances of labour councils across the province doing good things with members who may be experiencing issues in their workplace or may be on strike, but they are also involved in volunteering at events and organizing,” said Gawronsky. “They’re a strong and important voice in communities.”
