The MGEU recently released a revised training schedule for its 2009/2010 local officer and steward training.

Changes to the new Membership Education Calendar and Program Guide apply mainly to the fall 2009 schedule, which now includes a number of additional sessions of We are the MGEU, Effective Meetings and Representing our Members as well as several regional sessions of Advanced Steward training.

The course changes are part of the union’s ongoing commitment to developing the skills of its active members by bringing core union training closer to members' communities.

“We’ve heard from many members that they’d prefer if we could find a way to bring training closer to home,” said MGEU President Peter Olfert. “This is our response. We want to make sure we’re doing everything possible to help them develop the skills they need. So if they can’t come to the city to take the training, we’re going to try to bring the training to them.”

The MGEU's education department will evaluate the success and attendance of this fall’s sessions, and may develop additional regional training in the future if there is enough demand for it. No changes have been made to the 2009/2010 Health and Safety Education schedule.

Later this summer and early in September, the union will begin mailing out applications to activists who require the applicable training. In the meantime, members are encouraged to contact the education department through the union’s Resource Centre if they have any questions or would like to learn more about training opportunities with the union.
