It is with great sadness the MGEU announces that long-time MGEU activist Jan Henley passed away this morning, December 20, 2018.

A deeply devoted and passionate child welfare worker throughout her career, Jan first became active in her union in 1991. Over more than two decades, she represented her fellow members as Local President, Social Sciences Component Director, and MGEU 4th Vice-President. Jan also sat on numerous MGEU Committees over the years and was especially proud to chair the Women’s Committee.

Always one to speak her mind and fight hard for what she felt was just, Jan was an outstanding mentor and leader not only in her own Component, but throughout the union as a whole. She played a prominent supporting role in bringing Winnipeg CFS into the MGEU fold, and was a tireless supporter of her fellow members during the Phoenix Sinclair Inquiry.

As the recipient of a kidney donation over 35 years ago, Jan’s health never kept her from being a force to be reckoned with. With her passing, Manitoba has lost a strong, caring advocate for our most vulnerable children and a lifelong champion of fairness and equality for all.
