Michelle Gawronsky has been elected to her 4th term as MGEU President at the 65th biennial convention.
Gawronsky has been an MGEU member for over 30 years and was first elected as President of the MGEU in 2012. Prior to that, she was a dedicated activist within the union holding various positions including, Steward, Table Officer, Component Director and Provincial Officer.
“I’m ready to get back to work and represent my fellow MGEU members,” Gawronsky said. “It’s extremely humbling to lead Manitoba’s largest union and I want to thank the members for putting their trust in me once again. I also want to thank everyone who let their name stand as a candidate and congratulate those elected today. I look forward to serving our members with you all.”
The MGEU is the largest and most diverse union in the province with over 40,000 members. Gawronsky said she is dedicating this term to raising more awareness about the negative effects stemming from government cuts and privatization.
“These past two years have been challenging for MGEU members. Government cuts and threats of privatization continue to increase. Whether that’s in the civil service in the form of our highways department or government air services, health care, or post secondary institutions to name a few – cuts are jeopardizing public services and stretching our members thin,” Gawronsky said. “I will continue to work with MGEU members and our board to ensure we are doing everything we can to protect our members so they can keep delivering public services that we all count on.”
