The National Day of Mourning, held annually in Canada on April 28, is dedicated to remembering those who have lost their lives or suffered injury or illness on the job.

The day will be observed in several communities throughout Manitoba. In Winnipeg, the annual Leaders Walk begins earlier (10:30 am) at the Union Centre and will head down Broadway to Memorial Park where mourners will gather for a service (11am) and groundbreaking ceremony for the new Workers’ Memorial. Day of Mourning events are also being planned in Brandon, Thompson and Dauphin.

The declaration of April 28 as the Day of Mourning in Canada was first recognized in 1991, and flags flew at half-mast and ceremonies were held across the country to recognize the lives needlessly lost and the suffering of those left in the wake of workplace tragedy.

This year the Day of Mourning falls on Saturday, April 28, but many events will be held on Friday, April 27.
