It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gillian Covernton.

Gillian worked at the MGEU as the Pension and Benefits Officer at the Winnipeg Office. Although she was only with us a short time – having started in February 2008 – she had a profound impact on those she worked with. Gillian was always willing to lend a hand and share her expertise to members and staff. Her smile, energy and friendly demeanour were contagious and will be greatly missed around the office. All of Gillian’s friends at the MGEU wish to offer their sincere condolences to her family in this difficult time.

About Gillian

Gillian was a vivacious and loving wife to husband Paul Lourenco, a cherished daughter to Bob and Debbie and a loyal and close sister to her brother Sean. She graduated with an M.A. in History from the University of Manitoba and attended Kelvin High School and Robert Smith School prior to that.

After university and during summers Gillian worked for the Superannuation Board of Manitoba. Gillian became an expert on Manitoba history and served as the editor of Manitoba History in 2004-2005. Gillian loved Victoria Beach where she made lifelong friendships. She adored animals and held a special place in her heart for her puppies Sophie, Gracie and Lucie.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Andrews River Heights United Church, 255 Oak Street at Kingsway. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
