MGEU member, Arleen Pluchinski, was honoured this week with the Worker SAFEty Award at the fifth annual SAFE Work Awards in Winnipeg.

A Resource Tech 2 at Pineland Forest Nursery and 31-year Civil Service member, Arleen has sat on her Workplace Health and Safety Committee for 13 years and is the Workplace Health and Safety Rep for her Local (#39, Civil Service Physical Sciences, Area 5). Some of her initiatives over the years include writing and implementing safe work procedures and training all employees to spot and control hazards. She recognized the need for a strong, dedicated voice to advocate for worker safety issues, and stepped up to the task.

“Congratulations to Arleen for her commitment to keeping her workplace and co-workers safe. To be recognized in this way shows a great deal of dedication to keeping others safe, so it’s wonderful to see her efforts celebrated,” said Michelle Gawronsky, MGEU President. “When I was at Pineland for a workplace tour, it was very evident the workers practice the safety and health procedures that Arleen has been instrumental in implementing there.”

For the first time, the SAFE Work Awards were presented at The Safetys, a new gala event that combines the awards programs for eight Manitoba safety organizations. A wide range of industries attended the event and were represented in the list of winners.
