The following letter has been sent to all members of the MGEU's HCSS component by MGEU President Peter Olfert.
May 15, 2009
Dear HCSS Member:
In the coming days, you’ll be voting on a tentative settlement. This is not to influence your decision but rather ¯ I’m writing today to let you know how proud I am to represent you as your president.
It’s always an extremely trying time when negotiations break down and we’re faced with the real possibility of strike action. But the resolve and solidarity of the Health Care Support Services Component throughout the ordeal was truly inspiring ¯ forcing management to finally agree to arbitrate the vacation issue for part time employees, which is what the union proposed in December.
As your union, we’re well aware of how thankful Manitobans should be for the work you do. You care for the most vulnerable among us, often under very difficult circumstances, with compassion and respect. All you ask from your employer is the same dignity with which you treat your patients. But too often, you don’t receive the thanks and recognition you deserve.
When I speak to the media, I often refer to our HCSS members as the “backbone of our health care system.” This spring, you truly were the backbone of our fight. You stood your ground and let management know that you would not back down. Together, you stood up for respect and made your voices heard.
I believe the HCSS Component will come out of this experience stronger than ever. There is still much to do on your behalf, and I look forward to working with all of you to achieve the respect you deserve.
In Solidarity,
Peter Olfert
MGEU President
