Deadline: July 10, 2017

Please note: Due to changing organizational priorities, we have revised the MTAP posting from March 2017 to include activities related to membership outreach.

This MTAP opportunity allows members to enhance their skills in representing members in the workplace, as well as developing membership outreach skills through organizing activities and participating in campaigns.

This is a six month program, during which the MTAP trainee will be assigned to a team of Staff Representatives and will advocate on behalf of members to resolve workplace issues, complaints and grievances. The MTAP trainee will also work with the Public Affairs team participating in campaigns and mobilizing members. As requested, the trainee will represent the MGEU at Local union meetings and events, as well as stakeholder meetings.

It is expected this opportunity will commence in fall of 2017. This opportunity is conditional upon the MGEU successfully arranging a leave of absence for the MTAP trainee. The MTAP trainee will not engage in any political activities of the Union during the term of the training. While in this program, the successful applicant will be in receipt of salary and benefits as set out under the terms of the staff collective agreement (A.C.T.E.). Applicants should understand that upon completion of the training program there is no guarantee of continued or future employment.

To be considered for this program, you must be a member of the MGEU and have experience as an activist. The ability to promote labour and navigate through a unionized workplace is required. The ability to read and interpret collective agreements and other related legislation and regulations is also required.  Excellent communication skills along with strong interpersonal, problem solving, and negotiating skills are a must. This position involves some evening and weekend work along with travel including overnight hotel stays.
