On June 21, 2017 we celebrate National Aboriginal Day –an annual celebration first proclaimed in 1996 to recognize the diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.

Collectively these groups make up the Aboriginal peoples of Canada. For generations, many Indigenous Peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near June 21 due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.

This year on June 21, the MGEU is once again proud to sponsor the Brandon celebration at École New Era School (527 Louise Ave) from noon - 7pm.

In Winnipeg that same day, the MGEU is joining with other unions as a sponsor of the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network’s Aboriginal Day Live celebration. The event is held at the historical Forks site in Winnipeg – the centre of Turtle Island. Please join us at the Kids Zone (open noon – 6pm) and participate in the round dance celebration at noon.

“Unions play an important role in advocating for fairness and equality in our workplaces and our communities,” says MGEU President Michelle Gawronsky. “That’s why we’ve joined with other unions through the MFL to celebrate Aboriginal Day. It’s just one way to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage and contributions of Indigenous peoples."
