The MTAP is a MGEU membership development program for persons interested in enhancing their skills on representing members in their workplace. This is an intensive six month program which will provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain skills and knowledge related to the Staff Representative I.
During the program the MTAP trainee will be assigned to a multi-level team of Staff Representatives and will advocate on behalf of members for resolution of workplace issues, complaints, grievances, appeals, and arbitration cases. The trainee will be required to work with Local Presidents to select dates for local meetings and act as a support for those meetings. The trainee will also be required as requested, to represent MGEU in local unit events or stakeholder meetings.
Two candidates will be selected for this training opportunity, one to commence in late spring of 2017 and one to commence in late fall of 2017. This opportunity is conditional upon the MGEU successfully arranging a leave of absence for the MTAP trainee. The MTAP trainee will not engage in any political activities of the Union during the term of the training. While in this program, the successful applicant will be in receipt of salary and benefits as set out under the terms of the staff collective agreement (A.C.T.E.) . Applicants should understand that upon completion of the training program there is no guarantee of continued or future employment.
To be considered for this program you must be a member of the MGEU and have experience as an activist. The ability to promote labour and navigate through a unionized workplace is required. The ability to read and interpret collective agreements and other related legislation and regulations is also required. Strong interpersonal, problem solving and negotiating skills are a must. This position involves some evening and weekend work along with travel including overnight hotel stays.
