The votes are in and delegates at the MGEU 2016 Convention have voted Michelle Gawronsky in for her 3rd term as their President. This year marked the 64th biennial convention.

Michelle Gawronsky was first elected as President of the MGEU in 2012. Michelle has been an MGEU member for over 30 years.  Prior to being elected as President, Michelle was a dedicated activist within the union holding various positions including, Steward, Table Officer, Component Director and Provincial Officer.

Michelle is a proud mother of four and grandmother of two. Her work background includes working as a home care attendant, health care aid and activity coordinator at the Vita Personal Care Home. As well, she was a paramedic for 14 years.

“I’m humbled by this support from the members and honoured that they have placed their trust in me once again,” said Gawronsky. “I am looking forward to working with all the members of the MGEU, my fellow board members and want to congratulate everyone elected today on their success. We have a big job to do and the members are counting on us. By working together we can make sure we continue to be the strongest union we can be.”

The MGEU is the largest union in Manitoba and continues to grow in numbers with just over 42,000 members.  MGEU members live and work throughout the province in a wide variety of workplaces.  Approximately 14,000 are employed directly by the Province of Manitoba working in the Civil Service helping to deliver valuable public services.  Other members work in crown corporations, universities and colleges, health care facilities, social service agencies, and arts and cultural organizations.

“Our membership is growing and we need to grab this opportunity to recruit more activists and give our workplaces a strong voice,” said Gawronsky. “The new Manitoba government said they would protect and invest in public services and we must hold them to that promise, but the only way we can do that is if we remain strong and make sure our voices are heard.”

Provincial Table Officers also elected today include:

  • 1st Vice President – Wayne Chacun
  • 2nd Vice President – Douglas Troke
  • 3rd Vice President – Shelley Wiggins
  • 4th Vice President – Charlotte McWilliams
