The minimum wage will increase in every province but two this year – Newfoundland and Labrador and Manitoba. That means that for the first time in nearly two decades here in our province the minimum wage will stay the same – despite steady cost of living increases.
The Manitoba Federation of Labour (MFL) is leading an initiative to do something about that. In an open letter to the Manitoba Premier, MFL President, Kevin Rebeck along with 60 community, labour and non-profit organizations called on the premier to increase it.
“Prices on everything keep going up. Groceries, utility bills, gas, it never seems to end. Working families were counting on an increase to minimum wage. Not to get rich, but to make ends meet,” says MGEU President, Michelle Gawronsky. “We are proud to support the MFL on this initiative, calling on the government to do the right thing and lift the freeze on minimum wage.”
