National Social Work Month is being celebrated across the country in March.

The MGEU and its National Union (NUPGE) are pleased to recognize and thank social workers in all regions for the vital services they provide in their local communities. Social workers are noted for their dedication to children and families in need. Their work requires heart, integrity and strong professional commitment. It is demanding work, which poses many challenges.

In 2008, the MGEU commissioned a public opinion poll, which asked the general public about such things as the government’s handling of child welfare issues and the importance they place on the work done by Child and Family social workers.

“What we found out in that poll is that Manitobans are concerned about a lack of funding and resources being provided by government to allow social workers to do their jobs more effectively,” said MGEU President Peter Olfert. “The severe economic stress of the times places even more emphasis on the important work they do. That’s why they need our full support."
