Each year, the National Union of Public and General Employees offers four scholarships that reflect its pursuit of equal opportunity for all workers. They are offered to the children/grandchildren and foster children/grandchildren of current or retired NUPGE members who are starting a post-secondary education in a public educational institution.

Among the winners this year is Matthew Baldwin, son of MGEU member Jannice Baldwin. Matthew is the recipient of the Terry Fox Memorial Scholarship.

Matthew won the award based on an essay that concluded with the following: “Public services have always been there to help me overcome life’s obstacles…Thanks to public services, I consider myself a normal person living a normal life…oh yeah, and I just happen to have a disability.”

The other NUPGE scholarship winners were as follows:

Scholarship for Aboriginal Canadians: Nicole Kennedy (NAPE)
Scholarship for Visible Minorities: Victoria Vargas (BCGEU)
Tommy Douglas Scholarship: Katherine Bennett Goss (OPSEU)

Congratulations to all of this year’s winners.
