winnipeg pride float

On August 2, 1987, about 250 people in Winnipeg took a brave step and marched out in the city’s first Pride Day.

This year, more than 30,000 people are expected to attend the ten-day Pride Winnipeg Festival, which has become a celebration of confidence, fun, colour, music, laughter, optimism, and activism for Manitoba’s LGBTTQ* community.

This year, the MGEU’s Equality and Human Rights Committee is celebrating the festival by entering a float in the parade this Sunday, June 1st.

It’s the first time the committee has entered a vehicle in the parade, something MGEU Equality and Human Rights Chairperson, Kimberley Lynn, feels is a great way to celebrate and support the LGBTTQ* community.

“I think organizations and unions like ours realize the important role they have to play in fostering fair and tolerant workplaces and communities,” said Lynn. “I’m very proud of our committee for throwing its support behind this event.”

The festival started May 23 and wraps up with a rally, parade and party on Sunday. MGEU members will be joining thousands this Sunday at 11:00 am for the rally at the Manitoba Legislature. The Pride Parade begins at noon followed by a Festival at The Forks and Official Dance Party at The Metropolitan Entertainment Centre.
