The Manitoba Developmental Centre (MDC) in Portage la Prairie was recently evaluated by the Council on Accreditation (COA) and as a result of an outstanding report is now accredited until 2017.

The COA is an independent international accreditation body that uses national standards of quality and performance to examine, audit and evaluate the client services, management practices, ethics, and human resource services of an organization.

The MDC was first accredited in 1989 and has maintained accreditation status ever since. The most recent review employed 349 elements of performance and practice to evaluate the JDC in areas from Administration & Management to Ethical Practice and Client Rights. The MDC received an outstanding accreditation report, and was congratulated by the COA “…on this amazing achievement.”

In listing their organizational strengths, the COA found the MDC to be “a highly ethical organization at all levels because of open, transparent practices by very capable, dedicated and seasoned staff.”  They also found that the MDC exhibited some of the best HR policies, processes and practices that the reviewer had seen in the last ten years.

More specifically, MDC personnel were recognized for their award-winning design of an emergency escape blanked for non-ambulatory residents. And in terms of Behaviour Support and Management, the MDC was found to be “a model for others to emulate.”
