Vista Park Lodge members from UFCW Local 832, started a legal strike against their employer, Extendicare, on Saturday morning.

The 100+ employees have been without a collective agreement since March 31, 2012.

Several MGEU members walked the picket line on Saturday in support of the Vista Park Lodge members.

“This is an extremely important strike to be in support of, as all health care support service is currently under negotiation. We all need to be supporting each other,” said MGEU President, Michelle Gawronsky.

Employees at Vista Park Lodge are currently earning significantly less than other employees working in private and public personal care homes. Now the company wants the ability to contract out work without assurances to current staff.

Under the Essential Services Act, members will still offer support to those in the care home. They will picket before and after their shifts and would welcome the support of the families visiting their friends and loved ones. The members just want and deserve a fair agreement.

Please show your support on Thursday, September 19th for a mass picket.
