Buying locally produced goods from socially responsible businesses and helping to build stronger communities. Is there a better way to feel good about shopping?

The Social Purchasing Portal in Winnipeg is making that happen by bringing locally-owned small businesses, social enterprises and co-ops together with job seekers, corporations and non-profit groups.

The end goal is to support Community Economic Development (CED) and Winnipeg shoppers can do their part by checking out what’s available and supporting these businesses who’ve committed to strengthening our communities.

Why Buy Local?

1. Buy local and almost 70% of your money stays in the local economy.
If you spend a dollar at a big box store, 43 cents stays in the community - when you spend your dollar at a local business almost 70 cents is reinvested in the community!

2. Better public services
More local businesses means a stronger tax base, which pays for better public services in our city.

3. Keep our community unique!
Local, one-of-a kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of Winnipeg and helps keep our community unique.

4. Reduce environmental impact
Local purchases require less transportation and reduces environmental impacts. Local businesses generally set up shop in city centres which contributes to less congestion, habitat loss, pollution and less excessive packaging.

5. Local lasts longer
Local businesses are owned by local people who are less likely to leave the community, and are more invested in the community’s future.
