At the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) Convention held earlier this month in Ottawa, former MGEU President Peter Olfert was honoured with a NUPGE Life Membership award.

Peter has been active in the labour movement for over four decades and was first elected to the MGEU Board of Directors in the mid-1970s. In 1986 he was elected MGEU President, a position he held for 24 years until his retirement in May 2010. During this time, he served as Manitoba's Vice-President on NUPGE's National Executive Board and was also an executive officer of the Manitoba Federation of Labour.

NUPGE thanked Peter for the solidarity and support he has shown on NUPGE's National Executive Board. They also paid tribute to Peter's strong leadership skills, his commitment to organizing, dedication to union innovation and the significant contribution he has made as an advocate for working people.

Congratulations Peter on this well-deserved honour!
